Lance was born on the Moonshae Isles, to the east of Waterdeep. His parents were coopers, barrel makers, living in the port city of Caer Westphal, on the isle of Snowdown. Far away from the Northmen troubles Lance’s upbringing was a quiet one. But Lance wanted more out of life than he was able to get from the isles, and so started seeking ways to leave, and head east to seek fame, and fortune. Lance never speaks of his family, even less so lately, but he does have 3 siblings, an older brother (Asger) and sister (Torunn) and a younger brother (Othir). They, nor their parents, know what happened to Lance.
During his private training sessions, where he taught himself how to use a sword, and learning to fight, he met and fell in love with a young priestess of Kelemvor, and soon the two left the isles and headed to Waterdeep, and beyond.
Traveling along they encountered many things, and still Lance sought for more. One day they came across two young travelers, a Halfling Druid and an Elf Sorceress, and soon they became good friends. Hearing of money, fame and wealth in the lands of Vaasa in the far east, they set off along the roads north of Cormyr, where the Druid wished to stop to investigate something going wrong with dreams in the area, they stopped one night.
During the night, while Lance was on watch he saw a shadowy form moving through the trees, and went to quietly investigate. Soon however he found himself being chased by many shadows. Eventually they caught him before he could get back to his friends. Trapped, he stood his ground and prayed for some power to help him. His prayers were answered, and a bright light shone through the small clearing he was in, dissolving the shadows.
From the light stepped a being of shifting shadows and light, offering Lance powers, if he swore to serve faithfully, which Lance did, not knowing the heavy price it would take on him. He was asked for his blade as a sign of fealty, and when he handed it to the creature, it’s blade turned black. Upon taking back the sword, he was jolted with tremendous power, knocking him back into a tree and knocking him out.
When he awoke, several days had passed, and he was no longer the man he was. While he could still retain his martial skills, he now felt raw power coursing through his body and mind, a mind now twisted to darkness. He returned to his friends, to show them his power, and found them angry at him. He grew resentful of them almost immediately, especially of Eloise the one whom he thought loved him.
Several days after that in an encounter, the now empowered Hexblade had used his blade against a creature of shadow, sent on purpose to trick and trap him, and the moment his magic and blade hit the creature the darkness exploded and enveloped all of them, trapping their souls in the blade he was cursed with.
The next thing he found himself trapped in the body of a Half-Elf bard, stupid enough to release the souls from the blade, and now he seeks to take the body as his own, and drive the others out. If given half the chance he would seek out the one who cursed him, and destroy him completely, but he cannot escape the lure of power of the shadows. He works in the light, for without light, there can be no shadows, only darkness.
